Japan Seeks Halal Business Opportunities: Normal Version
As tourism from Muslim areas increases, there is a movement in Japan to
obtain halal food certification.
Halal indicates items meet Islamic requirements. The certification provides
reassurance for Muslims food products do not contain forbidden ingredients
such as pork or alcohol. Halal restrictions have not been commonly recognized
in Japan, making it a less than ideal destination for Muslims. In France,
with its large Muslim community, a test kit has been developed to confirm
food is halal. On a recent visit, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar
noted the industry is now worth $3 trillion. He emphasized the sector represents
a major business opportunity for Japanese companies.
Japan has eased visa requirements for Southeast Asian countries since 2013
and is working to attract visitors. Looking ahead to the Tokyo Olympics,
it will need to do more to accommodate tourists from diverse cultures.

ハラールとは、イスラム教の要件を満たしている品のことを指します。 ハラール認証はイスラム教徒に対して、食品に豚やアルコールなどの禁止された原料が含まれていないことを保証するものです。日本ではハラールの制約が浸透していないため、イスラム教徒にとって決して理想的な観光地とは言えません。大規模なイスラム社会を持つフランスでは、食品がハラールであるかどうかを確認するための検査キットが開発されました。パキスタンのイスハク・ダール財務大臣は最近の訪日中に、ハラール産業が今や3兆ドルの規模であることに触れ、日本企業にとってこの分野が巨大なビジネスチャンスになると強調しました。

With Muslim tourists increasing, more Japanese companies are obtaining
halal food certification.
The certification indicates foods do not contain pork, alcohol or other
forbidden ingredients. Halal requirements are still not widely recognized
in Japan, which can create problems for Muslims. In France, with its large
Muslim population, a kit is available to test whether food is halal. On
a recent visit, Pakistan’s finance minister pointed out the industry is
worth $3 trillion. He noted it represents an important opportunity for
Japanese businesses.
Japan has eased some visa requirements and is trying to attract more tourists.
However, more work will be required to satisfy the diverse visitors expected
for the Tokyo Olympics.
